Postgraduate
MRes Science
The Master of Research (MRes) Science course is a postgraduate course that will provide applicants with an excellent opportunity to focus their research interests on one or two areas of science whilst also giving them the opportunity to work towards being able to translate their learning into research related outputs (e.g. submission for a peer-reviewed publication, peer reviewed research / knowledge transfer grant application, presentations).
The MRes Science can be studied either full time or part time and will enable students to develop a wide variety of skills, experience, and competence throughout their studies. The MRes will provide a thorough grounding should students consider moving towards Doctoral (PhD) studies, or pursue research related activities as a career. The course is taught within the Faculty of Science which engages in leading edge research in a variety of areas that include staff from the Schools of Biological Sciences, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Health Sciences and Social Work, Pharmacy and Biomedical Science, and Departments of Geography, Psychology and Sport and Exercise Science, run in conjunction with the University Graduate School.
Selection and admission are transparent and equitable, and comply fully with the University’s Equality and Diversity Policy. These processes ensure that proposed research projects and programmes of training can provide what is necessary to enable a student to complete the programme successfully, and that the student is suitably qualified, experienced and prepared to enable him/her to succeed.
The requirements for acceptance are clearly stated on the website and application is by completion of a University form in which candidates are required to provide information on their qualifications (including standard of English where it is not the first language of the applicant) and details of two academic references. Applicants based in the UK will normally be invited to attend a formal interview and overseas applicants will be interviewed by telephone or video link. At least two academic members of staff who will normally be the first supervisor and the Course Liaison Tutor, will be involved in decisions concerning acceptance. During the admissions process candidates are informed of disability-related grants and funds available to them through the University.
Admissions process:
- Information relating to the supervisors and project titles will be posted on the University website prior to each intake (September/January).
- If applicants are interested in any of the projects they should informally contact the relevant supervisor to discuss the project title. Should applicants have their own project area in mind, they are encouraged to discuss the feasibility of the project with the relevant Course Liaison Tutor.
- Applicants to apply for the MRes Science using the ‘Postgraduate Application Form’ where in Section 2 they indicate in ‘Part A’ that they are applying for a Taught programme.
- Applicants interviewed for a place on the MRes Science.
- Decision on the application is made in writing.
