Course Overview
Why take this course?
This is a unique course, specifically designed for international students, combining the study of sports management with business and English to help you develop the skills and knowledge necessary to work in the global sports business. Gain a solid grounding in the theoretical aspects of sports management, while developing your English language and communication skills.
What will I experience?
On this course you can:
- Undertake fieldwork, such as assisting in the organisation of an actual sports event in the community
- Visit our International Office to get all the support you need while living in a new country
- Brush up on your English language skills in our language labs, using the multimedia kits for effective language learning
What opportunities might it lead to?
This course will provide you with a strong foundation on which to build a career in a number of areas of sports management, in both the commercial and public sectors.
We cover a broad range of issues, such as sports policy and society, event management, sports business, coaching and the application of sports development, meaning you will have the opportunity to focus on specific areas of study that lead to a range of possible careers.

For level 1 entry: 280 points or equivalent or successful completion of 1 year university study plus English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 5.5 with no component score below 5.5, or equivalent.
For level 2 entry: successful completion of 2 years of university study plus English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 5.5 with no component score below 5.5, or equivalent.
For level 3 entry: successful completion of 3 years of university study plus English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.0, or equivalent.
For year 1 and 2 entry applicants require English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 5.5 with no component score below 5.5. For year 3 entry applicants require English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.0 with no component score below 5.5.

UK/EU/Channel Islands and Isle of Man full-time students: £8,750, International full-time students: £9,500 - this course is not available part time.

Structure & Teaching
Year one
The course begins by providing you with a firm foundation in the key theoretical and research principles that will underpin the following years. Also learn about the function of sport in British society.

Year two
Tailor your learning through a range of options and continue to develop your English language and business English skills. This year involves a specific focus on communication in the workplace.

Teaching and Assessment
In sports management we feel it is important that what you learn is put into a real-world context, so many of the tasks are often similar to those you may come across in a working environment. We even have opportunities for you to take your learning into the local community.
The format of teaching will consist of formal lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and practical experiences.

This unique course for international students is co-delivered by the Department of Sport & Exercise Science and the School of Languages & Area Studies. Learning Environments
You will benefit from plenty of indoor space for practical activities. Along with our many specialist labs, dedicated seminar spaces and interview rooms, the Department is located next to the University’s Nuffield Sports Centre and very near to the University’s St Paul’s Sports Centre. These two centres offer many facilities including sports halls, a 100-station gym, squash courts and fitness studios, all located at the heart of the University.
International Office
For our international students we have a dedicated team of advisers to support you as you settle into life in Portsmouth and at the University. One of the team almost certainly has direct experience of your culture and may even speak your language.
Language Laboratories
We have three state-of-the-art, Sony Virtuoso language labs offering a rich and effective multimedia language environment. Video, sound and text sources can be integrated to provide a first-class learning experience.
University Library
Modern, comfortable and a great learning environment, our library offers a wealth of information including 400,000 books, DVDs, maps and thousands of online ejournals and newspapers. Many electronic resources are available anywhere, 24/7 and our friendly staff are always on hand to help.

Career prospects
On completing this course, you will possess a combination of subject knowledge and good English language skills to give you a distinct advantage in the international job market. The global sports business is worth roughly in excess of £110 billion, meaning that opportunities for graduate employment are abundant. Specifically, you may find careers in areas such as marketing and event management, licensing and sponsorship, retail in sport and leisure, or sports development at either community or professional level.
