General entry requirements

The University considers a wide range of qualifications for entry. The information below lists the qualifications commonly accepted by the University. The list is not exhaustive or exclusive and candidates are encouraged to contact the University for advice about acceptability of qualifications not listed here.  Please also note that, in accordance with our aim to recognise diversity and equality of opportunity, our offers can be based not only on a candidate’s academic record but also on evidence of potential. The University looks to, for example, a candidate’s personal statement, references and the suitability for the course.

Qualifications

A and AS Levels

Most full-time undergraduate applicants to the University apply with, or are taking, A and AS levels.   We normally expect applicants to present between three and four AS, and two to three A Levels, in appropriate subjects.

Other qualifications

The University also considers applicants with the following awards:

  • Scottish Advanced Highers
  • Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Diploma
  • Irish Leaving Certificate
  • 14-19 Diploma
  • BTEC Diploma awards
  • Pre U

14-19 Diploma

The Advanced Diploma is accepted for most undergraduate degree courses in the University. The Progression Diploma is acceptable to a range of Foundation degree courses. The exact requirements for each course can be checked on the individual course pages.

Extended project

The University welcomes applications from candidates who are taking or have taken an extended project as part of their A level or Diploma qualification.  Offers may include achievement in the extended project, specifically if considered particularly relevant to the course applied to.

A* Grade

The University does not currently make offers using A* grades.

International qualifications

The University accepts the following qualifications:

Irish Leaving Certificate (in line with UCAS Tariff)

English language requirements

For applicants whose first language is not English, the University’s minimum English language proficiency level for undergraduate study is 6.0 to 6.5 in the IELTS test or equivalent, or GCSE/IGCSE English Language C. Individual courses may have a higher level of requirement for English language where this is regarded as necessary. You can find these requirements on individual course pages.

GCSE qualifications

The University normally requires a minimum of three GCSE passes in subjects other than those offered at A Level.  GCSE passes relate to grades A*-C.  We require applicants to have passed GCSE English and mathematics.

BTEC National Award

Entry to a Foundation degree

One appropriate GCE/VCE A Level plus a satisfactory interview or Progression Diploma
