Undergraduate

Why come to Portsmouth?

Going to university requires a real investment in time, money and energy. We try to make sure that we match the effort that students put in by making it as convenient as possible for them to take full advantage of what's on offer.

Quality Teaching

Our first priority is to provide exciting and challenging courses of study that will stretch the mind and equip students to follow their future interests. We have a comprehensive range of undergraduate courses which extend beyond the subject or discipline base to include personal development planning, career planning and the development of general attributes to enhance employability.

Our excellent academic teaching is recognised in recently being awarded two Centres of Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Many of our courses are professionally accredited and have strong links with the local, national and international industry.

Setting our students UP for life

We also support our students on their path to employment by providing the opportunity to develop the transferable skills that employers increasingly seek.

We've asked past and present students and employers what they value most, and we've used this information to design a range of programmes, called Set UP for Life, that will help students to develop skills and knowledge in areas that will be both useful and enjoyable.

Set UP for Life electives

Our Set UP for Life electives are available to all students at the University and can be taken as part of their course. They have been designed to offer the chance to try new things that may not be directly related to the main programme of study, but they are integrated within the overall course structure and most of them carry credits that count towards the final degree.

Electives cover various topics, from learning a new language or a new musical instrument to developing business and entrepreneurial skills, working in the local community or qualifying as a sports coach.

Careers in the Curriculum

Our Careers and Employment Service works closely with academic departments to ensure that careers awareness activities are built into courses at an early stage. Careers in the Curriculum activities are built around a common core that is based on our knowledge of the graduate job market and employers needs, and many of them are tailored to recognise the different characteristics of different subject areas.

Purple Door

Purple Door is a dynamic gateway between the University, its students, and local employers. Purple Door is located right in the middle of the campus where students can drop in at convenient times to chat to the helpful and knowledgeable staff, who will advise on the different Set UP for Life programmes and also help with the following:

  • Part time work and work placements
  • Voluntary opportunities
  • Access to graduate vacancies
  • Earn as you Learn
  • Careers Information Advice and Guidance
