Great student support

From the minute you arrive we are dedicated to making your experience rewarding and memorable. For those times when you would like to improve your skills or need support and advice with any issue, however large or small, help is at hand from our friendly, professional Student Advice Services. We offer a range of both academic and personal support tailored to your needs. To find out more about student support you can visit our dedicated Student Services web pages or click on the links in each section below.

Academic support

Academic Skills Unit (ASK)

It provides a range of services all over campus, from drop-in sessions to group workshops and personal one-to-one appointments tailored to your specific needs. Interactive online tutorials allow you to work on your skills in your own time and from wherever you please. Whatever your course, from social work and pharmacy, to business and engineering, ASK can help you succeed. To find out more, go to www.port.ac.uk/ask.

Maths Café

The Maths Café offers all students, on any course, free help in understanding and improving their maths and statistical skills. Drop in at a number of friendly locations all over campus for one-to-one support or visit the Maths Café Centre. Handouts and details of online resources on key topics are also available. For more information, go to www.port.ac.uk/mathscafe.

Personal support

The Additional Support and Disability Advice Centre (ASDAC)

If you have a specific learning difficulty, chronic illness, mental health difficulty or physical or sensory impairment that may have an adverse impact on your ability to study, it would be extremely helpful if you could tell us on your application form. You’ll then be contacted as appropriate to discuss any special arrangements or adjustments that might be necessary to ensure that you derive the maximum benefit from your study. ASDAC will also send you an information pack, which outlines the nature and range of support available, and ensure that any necessary support is provided in a timely manner. For further information, please visit www.port.ac.uk/asdac.

Chaplaincy

Pop into Chaplaincy anytime for a cuppa and a chat, or just some space. A quiet room is available for reflection, thought and prayer, and we also have Islamic prayer facilities. Chaplaincy is there for all students, regardless of faith or world view. You can visit if you would like to talk to someone in confidence or explore anything on your mind. To find out more, visit www.port.ac.uk/chaplaincy.

Counselling Service

Counselling at Portsmouth offers help with the things that can affect your studies or prevent you from fully enjoying university life – things like stress, relationship problems and feeling anxious or depressed. Whether you use the online resources and self-help materials, attend group workshops on issues such as stress awareness and self esteem, or talk to one of the team face-to-face or via email, they are here to listen carefully, understand your situation and work towards a positive resolution in a way that works for you. To find out more, visit www.port.ac.uk/counselling.

Health and medical care

We hope that your time at university will be healthy and enjoyable, but it’s always a good idea to register with a doctor and a dentist as soon as you arrive. A full GP practice is situated next to the Nuffield Centre in the middle of campus. You can, of course, decide to join another practice and we have a comprehensive list of local surgeries.

Nursery

We recognise the importance of childcare and offer a pre-school nursery that prides itself on giving high quality day care at a competitive price. Children have the opportunity to learn through play using the High/Scope approach in a safe, happy and stimulating environment. The nursery is registered to accept children aged between six months and five years. If you need to apply for a place, you should contact them directly as soon as you can as places are limited. For more details, visit www.port.ac.uk/nursery.
