The Portsmouth experience
Outstanding facilities
Over £74 million has been invested in making learning, sport and leisure spaces the best possible between 2001–2010 and we are justifiably proud of our buildings where you'll learn, live or relax. Most of our teaching buildings are close to halls of residence, the town centre, nightlife and the seafront, meaning you don't have to travel far for anything. Our city campus has a blend of architecturally bold new spaces and more traditional buildings, but all are equipped and managed to the highest standards.

The University Library

Our library is so much more than books; it’s a great place to study and access all your information needs. Located right in the heart of the campus, next door to the Students’ Union and in the grounds of leafy Ravelin Park, it is open from 8am until midnight every day during term-time. To meet the needs of your busy schedule, you will also have 24/7 access to electronic resources.
So that you can easily find high-quality information to boost your marks, we are constantly investing in resources for all subject areas and offer:
- thousands of ebooks and ejournals, as well as online newspapers, which can be accessed across campus, from home or wherever there is an internet connection
- over 400,000 books, as well as DVDs, maps and microfilms
- wireless connections across the whole building and laptops for loan
- an online catalogue so you can check availability of resources and reserve or renew them
- high demand books on one-day or four-hour loans to ensure wide availability
- a service that lets you borrow books from other libraries
- a handy cafe to enjoy hot and cold snacks while you take a break
You’ll also never be far from help as there are friendly and supportive staff on every floor. Plus, whatever your style of study, you can pick the type of area you prefer – from group rooms to silence.
Our specialist librarians work closely with lecturers, making sure you have the resources you need. They can also help you in person or via email and run an intensive programme of workshops designed to help you succeed.

3rd Space

Upstairs in the Student Centre is 3rd Space – a social learning space for students to study and meet up with friends. It is open from 8am until midnight every day during term-time. Small and large groups, or individuals looking for a quiet space, can use the inflatable igloos or pods.
Computing
You’ll want access to the best computer facilities and places to study between lectures, and we have invested heavily in these areas to ensure that’s what you’ll get. We have open access areas all around campus with the latest equipment and excellent support if you need it, so you can focus on your studies:
- computer suites with specialised software and equipment available throughout campus
- four open access areas with PCs and Macs, printing facilities, laptop working areas and group working spaces
- a fast, extensive and free wireless network, so if you prefer to use your own laptop, you can access University resources and the internet wherever you choose
- IT support available all year round, 24 hours a day – when the main Service Desk is closed, we have an out-of-hours IT support helpline that is available from 5.15pm–8.00am during the week and 24 hours a day during weekends and bank holidays
- service delivery advisers on hand to assist with problems

Student IT Support Centre
When you need that little extra help, the Student IT Support Centre is located next door to the Students’ Union, right in the centre of the campus. Here you can get free help with any IT issue, whether you are having trouble connecting to the wireless network or simply need some basic IT advice.
