Below you will find examples of our excellent simulated learning environments, which reflect our investment in state-of-the-art facilities, as well as the innovative and real-world contexts of our courses. These spaces demonstrate the strong vocational and professional nature of many of our courses, where students are developing essential knowledge and skills for successful employment in a global workplace. Criminology, forensics, psychology and law is really brought to life at Portsmouth. Student biologists, criminologists, lawyers, actors and psychologists might be engaged in a simulated case using our labs, Forensics House and interview suite to develop and prepare evidence. Culminating in the court case presided over by a real judge in our Mock Courtroom.
Journalism students get to use their dedicated newsroom to create magazines and newspapers. Our television and film students use the TV Studio to create material for a nationally broadcast TV channel as well as their own productions.


In our new £9 million Dental Academy, students are working in integrated teams of dentists and dental care professionals. All skills can be practiced in our phantom head skills lab. Every student is assigned to one of four practices in the Dental Academy offering dental care to the local community.
Healthcare and paramedic students have excellent facilities to support their learning. Our Centre for Simulation in Health Care is fully equipped with patient simulators that react like human patients.


Sport and exercise science students have biomechanics and physiology labs with a range of specialist facilities including a low humidity chamber with immersion pool, large climatic chamber with swimming flume, a smaller sub-zero chamber for Arctic and Antartic preparation, an automated tracking system, sports hall/ dance studio and visual 3D software.
Pharmacy students are able to check and dispense prescriptions in our fully-stocked model pharmacy. Another standout facilitiy available to pharmacy and biomedical science students is the University of Portsmouth Imaging Centre (UPIC) that is equipped with the latest microscopy and cell imaging equipment.


All our radiography students gain early experience of clinical practice in their first year. We support this with excellent facilities that allow you to practice your clinical skills on campus before venturing into the clinical environment. These facilities include a state-of-the-art imaging suite, a comprehensive electronic film library, two FAST ultrasound scanners and a three-dimensional virtual radiotherapy training (VERT)suite.
Most of our engineering degrees are professionally accredited and all are supported by fully equipped, industry-standard labs and facilities. These include a Space Lab, Mechanical Behaviour of Materials Lab and a Regional Centre for Manufacturing.


Students studying accounting and finance subjects can analyse real-time global financial market movements using Bloomberg Terminals – the financial profession’s industry-standard computer system.
Animation and computer games students have some amazing environments and equipment to enable them to develop their creative professional skills. Our Virtual Reality Lab, PlayStation development kits, VFX facility (FOAM\Digital), 3D and 2D animation, compositing, editing and image manipulation tools, and the latest industry-standard software really bring these courses to life.
