Drop In Days

Drop In (2011)

Starting university in 2012? There's still time to visit the campus.

Please note that the Department Open Days have now finished. In place of these events we’re now offering informal Drop in Days for students who would still like to visit the University prior to starting your course in September.  Please note that these are small scale events for people considering late applications for 2012 entry.  They are not Preview Day or Open Days.

These events are designed to give you a general taste of the University and campus.  They do not guarantee a meeting with a lecturer.

If you are looking to start University in September 2013 then you may benefit more by attending a Preview Day from July onwards.  These events provide a more detailed look at the campus and subject areas.  You can book your place on a Preview Day now.

When can I come and see the campus?

We will be running Drop In Days between 12-4pm on the following dates:

  • Wednesday 23rd May
  • Wednesday 30th May
  • Wednesday 6th June
  • Wednesday 20th June

What can I do during these Drop In Days?

During these events you will get the opportunity to experience:

  • A Halls of Residence tour - James Watson and Harry Law, two of our most popular centrally located halls of residence will be open for visitors to view.
  • A guided walking tour - Current students will be on hand to provide a guided walking tour of the campus.
  • A chance to meet current students - Our Student Guides come from a wide range of subjects across the University.  They’re more than happy to talk you about their experience of studying here at Portsmouth.  As well as give you an insight into what there is to do in the city outside of University hours.
  • Visit Student Housing and Student Finance staff for any enquiries you have - They can offer advice on finding somewhere to live, and the financial support available to you.  Call in to their office for a one-to-one discussion
  • Speak to a representative from the Students Union - The SU will have an information stand in the Registration venue.  They’ll be able to answer all your questions about what clubs and societies Portsmouth has to offer, plus discuss what staff support and democratic opportunities are available to students.
  • Drop in to see the University Library and our sports facilities, including the gym - Visitors are welcome to call in and take a look round both facilities.  Staff will also be happy to answer any enquiries you have.

Can I talk to a lecturer?

The availability of academic staff is subject to time-tabling commitments.

We will do our best to accommodate all requests to speak to an academic member of staff, but we cannot guarantee that someone from your subject area will be available on all dates.  The further in advance you book your place, the better our chances of securing a meeting for you.

These events are designed to provide an informal look around the campus before starting here in September.  We appreciate that not all visitors will want to speak to a member of teaching staff.  The booking form will ask you to specify whether or not you are interested in doing so to help us plan accordingly.

Do I need to tell you that I'm coming to a Drop In Day?

alt text Yes. Please book on to a drop in event now.  We’ll take your details so that we can contact you to confirm whether it’s been possible to arrange a meeting with a relevant member of academic staff in advance of your visit.

Where do I register on the day of the event?

When it comes to the day of the event please register on arrival at the Purple Door Information Centre on Guildhall Walk, PO1 2DD.  For directions on how to find the registration venue click here.

Where can I park?

We would suggest that visitors park at Gunwharf Quays (a ten minute walk away), for a discounted rate of £4.00 for the day by downloading our parking voucher (.pdf).  Please note that the reduced rate cannot be offered on the 30th May.   The post code for Gunwharf Quays car park is PO1 3TZ.

Alternatively you can use parking meters in the vicinity of the registration venue or near-by public car parks which can be located on the Portsmouth City Council map.

Disabled drivers

A limited number of spaces can be reserved in University car parks for disabled visitors.  If you require a disabled parking space please indicate this in the special requirements section of the booking form.  Please contact us as far in advance of your visit as possible to allow enough time for a parking permit to be sent to you in the post, which you will then need to display in your vehicle.

Please call 023 9284 2748 and we will confirm which car park a space has been reserved in and if a permit has been posted.
