Recognising advancement of gender equality: representation, progression and success for all

Welcome to the University of Portsmouth Athena SWAN site. The Athena SWAN charter was launched in 2005 to recognise the commitment of institutions that promote and advance the career development, particularly but not exclusively, of women in science.

Joanne Brindley, Dental Academy department lead

We are delighted and proud to report that the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy (UPDA) has obtained a Bronze award in recognition of it commitment and work. View our Athena Swan submission.

In addition to university wide policies, UPDA is working to promote gender equality and to address the challenges particular to the discipline of dentistry. The School’s equality and diversity committee is dedicated to reviewing our practices to then enable us to develop actions that will support gender equality. Some of these actions includes:

  • Robust mechanisms to support and mentor staff for career development
  • Raise the profile of our commitment to equality
  • Ensure a balanced student gender profile
  • Better monitoring of equality data
  • Improved mechanisms to progress issues identified through monitoring

We hope that you will find this site useful. We welcome feedback and if you wish to suggest additional resources that could be included here, please contact our Athena SWAN Champion, leanna.wynne@port.ac.uk.
