GIS and Remote Sensing Laboratory Resources
This laboratory provides the capability of collecting data from most types of photography imagery or documentary sources. Equipment comprises a high-resolution aerial photograph scanner and A0 large format scanner. Photogrammetric software supports advanced levels of digital remote sensing. Industry standard GIS software and enterprise database software are available to support the full spectrum of spatial analysis. These facilities are supported by a full-time Senior GIS technician.
Physical Geography and Meteorology Laboratory Resources
An Advanced Physical Laboratory and Meteorological Laboratory support teaching and research activities, and are available to use by staff and students. Supervised activities include undergraduate practicals and dissertation work, supported by a full time specialist technician Mr Linley Hastewell. The Advanced Physical Laboratory includes sample preparation facilities and specialist analytical equipment, incorporating a laser diffraction particle size analyser (Malvern MS3000), atomic absorption spectrophotometer and FT-IR spectrometer. Model simulation facilities include a rainfall simulator and flume with 2 metre standard tilting flow channel. Specialist PCs in the Meteorology Laboratory support unique software. An automatic weather station (Campbell Scientific), in operation on the roof since 1995, provides meteorological data for external and internal use. The laboratory also stores older UK meteorological data in hard copy form. Enquiries about meteorological data should be made to Dr Nicholas Pepin.
The Department of Geography has a wide range of field equipment for surveying and monitoring the physical environment. Equipment ranges from simple levelling to advanced differential high precision GPS, total stations and a laser scanning multi-station. A UAV is available for aerial photography and photogrammetric data collection. Non-contact 3D laser scanners and structure from motion software are available for close range work. For environmental data collection there is a range of equipment available including hand-held meteorological instruments and data loggers, sediment traps, water quality probes, coring equipment for palaeo-environmental reconstruction, acoustic Doppler current profilers and ground penetrating radar. A full time GIS Manager and a specialist technician support the development and management of fieldwork.
