Biography

I graduated and completed my doctoral research in the Department of Geography at the University of Portsmouth. After working as a Research Fellow, I joined the Office for National Statistics before training and working as a primary school teacher. Having become Headteacher of a local school, I have returned to academia to work as a Senior Research Fellow with Professor Liz Twigg on a two- year, NHS-funded project examining variations in the use and effectiveness of Community Treatment Orders for patients with mental health care needs.

Research

The majority of my research has been quantitative in nature and has involved the application of multilevel modelling techniques to the analysis of large and complex health-related datasets though I have also carried out qualitative, ethnographic work.

The project I am currently working on is titled “Evaluating the Effects of Community Treatment Orders (CTO’s) in England Using the Mental Health Minimum Dataset”. This is a two-year project that aims to establish which type of patients in which type of places, and at what cost, benefit from Community Treatment Orders. By using the Mental Health Minimum Dataset, an England-wide administrative data source, the project will be the first nationally representative study to do this.

The project is funded from the Health Services and Delivery Research Programme of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and involves a team of researchers across several institutions including Warwick Medical School and the University of Southampton as well as Professor Liz Twigg and myself at the University of Portsmouth.
