Biography

After graduating with a BSc in Geographical Information Science in 2012 I joined the department as a PhD Student. Having been an active committee member of the University of Portsmouth Mountaineering and Climbing Club for many years, my passion for the outdoors has resulted in my SPA climbing instructor qualification and my work towards other professional outdoor awards. This interest in the outdoors sparked my research interest in the relationship between individuals’ geographical context and their attitude to and perception of risk relating to outdoor activities.

Teaching Responsibilities

I deliver GIS components of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the department. I have contributed to the MSc in Geographical Information Systems and the undergraduate unit, Introduction to GIS.

Research

My primary research interest lies in the analysis of geographical data, specifically in relation to the outdoor pursuits sector. My PhD focuses on the geographical patterns of perception of voluntary risk (i.e. risks we consciously choose to take, such as climbing a rock face or crossing a road). More specifically I am aiming to establish whether our geographical context and background has any influence on the way we perceive and approach risks and hazards.

I also have a particular interest in database applications and programming in relation to geographical information science and systems, along with crowd sourcing and open source applications of GIS.
