If you are interested in undertaking a Postgraduate Research Degree the first thing to consider is how you will fund this programme of study. There are a number of routes available within the Department, firstly you can self-fund your studies, secondly at certain points throughout the year the Department advertise funded Postgraduate Research Degree opportunities. Finally, you could seek funding from a sponsor to enable you to undertake your research degree. This may be a government sponsor, a commercial sponsor, or any other appropriate organisation or individual. You may wish to pursue funding either on your own before identifying a supervisor or in collaboration with a supervisor. Once you have determined your funding route, then consider the topic area and the member of staff that you wish to study with. Please make contact with the member of staff who will then be able to guide you through the process.

The aim of your postgraduate research degree is to ensure that you have the requisite research training and education to prepare you for future research and career endeavours. As such, your research degree will be delivered in conjunction with the Graduate School where a comprehensive development programme will train you in all aspects of research processes and you will be supported by a supervisory team of up to three academics. Further to this, all postgraduate researchers are encouraged to attend, and submit work to appropriate conferences. The research award (either MPhil or PhD) will be assessed via a written thesis and a viva-voce examination.
