Visit the Department of Sport and Exercise Science

We warmly invite you to visit the Department of Sport & Exercise Science for an open day to see what we have to offer. For each open day our student guides will provide you with a tour of our world-class facilities and there will be talks with members of our academic staff about our courses, facilities and research.

Activities

There will be a welcome talk from the Head of Department Richard Thelwell, or the Associate Head of Education Chris Hughes. The tour of our department will include our biomechanics laboratories, extreme environmental physiology chambers (where you will get to experience these extremes for yourself!), physiology and psychology laboratories. In each lab you will see our facilities, hear from the academics teaching on the courses and our student guides will be available for you to ask questions about what daily life as a student entails. There will also be an opportunity to meet staff to discuss individual questions over tea and biscuits.

Facilities

Facilities that you can view on the day include:

  • Biomechanics laboratory with motion capture systems, force platforms, pressure mat and electromyography systems
  • Sub-zero (-20°C) chamber suitable for Arctic and Antarctic preparation
  • Swimming Flume
  • 2 x climatic chambers with temperature, humidity and hypoxic capabilities
  • Physiology laboratories with monitoring equipment and ergometers
  • Psychology laboratory with eye-tracking system
  • Spinnaker sports hall

I thoroughly enjoy meeting and showing prospective students around the DSES facilities over the past 2 years. Getting to share my journey so far and answer questions about the whole of university life has been a pleasure. The first feel of the university is gained through an open day and it is an honour to be a part of this.

Kirsty Mcnamara, Level 5 Sport & Exercise Science student

I have been extremely fortunate to have met both parents and prospective students during open days, answering the many questions they have to make an informed choice. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to personally show visitors what makes the Sport and Exercise Science Department at the University of Portsmouth excellent. I have also been able to share my knowledge and opinions with prospective students to ensure that they begin their degrees with a vision in mind. Overall, I would definitely recommend both prospective and current students to partake in the Open Days.

Joshua Pun, Level 5 Sport & Exercise Science student

As a current student at the university, it is always an enjoyable experience to be part of the open day. The open days provide an insight into the course and university life. We are able to give potential students an idea of what our course entails and share the positive experiences we’ve had so far. The course builds your knowledge, experience, confidence and interpersonal skills which can be used throughout your career. Meeting like-minded people on your course and the amount you learn and achieve within 3 years is incredible.
