Biography

I joined the department in 2006 and am a Senior Lecturer in Sports Management and Development. I obtained my PhD from the University of Portsmouth in 2015 entitled ‘Elite Association Football Referee Training and Officiating: A Comparative Analysis of Refereeing Practices in Three European Leagues’. Prior to this I had graduated from the Master of Arts in Sports Development from the University of Gloucestershire where I also obtained my undergraduate degree. I have also worked in the sports management and development sector before taking up my role at the university, with both Bristol City Council and Hampshire County Council where I project managed a workplace activities scheme.

Teaching Responsibilities

I currently teach Sports Management and Development related subject areas on our undergraduate and postgraduate degree pathways. I am unit coordinator for Sports Event Organisation (yr 1), Sport Event Management (yr 2), Professional Practice in Sports Event Management (yr 3) and Strategic Events Management (MSc) as well as contributing to Sports Development Principles, Managing People in Sports Organisations, Sport Politics and Society and Comparative International Sports Provision. I also supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations and research projects as well as serving as the departmental Admissions Tutor.

Research

My main area of research is elite refereeing in Association Football. My research has considered refereeing drop out rates in football as well as refereeing training and retention. Currently my research focuses on the differences in the development, preparation, training and performance between referees from different countries within Europe and the impact that cultural differences have on elite referee training and development.

I am the Research Network Coordinator for the Referee and Match Official Research Network.
