Dr Joseph Costello is a senior lecturer in exercise physiology. He completed his PhD in exercise physiology at the University of Limerick, Ireland. After his PhD Joseph moved to Queensland University of Technology, Australia where he worked as a post-doctoral research fellow in the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation for three years. Joseph then undertook further post-doctoral research in the Extreme Environments Laboratory in the University of Portsmouth before being appointed as a lecturer in 2016.
Dr Costello is currently on the editorial board of Experimental Physiology, the commissioning editor for Extreme Physiology & Medicine, and a methodological editor for the Cochrane Bone, Joint and Muscle Trauma Group.
Joseph’s current research interests are directed toward:
i) understanding the physiological effects of various stressors (e.g. exercise, temperature, clothing) on human performance and
ii) establishing evidence-based practice in sport and exercise science through the publication of high quality systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

Joseph is also the Chair of the Department of Post and Exercise Science, Scientific and Ethics Review Committee.
Dr Costello’s research interests include exercise physiology, applied human physiology, extreme environmental physiology, occupational physiology, athletic recovery, physical activity interventions, systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
