Biography

I graduated in Physical Education and Outdoor Education and went on to teach in a number of locations, from the inner city London to rural Cambridgeshire. In 1990 joined the Rugby Football Union as a Development Officer for Cheshire and the North West, before moving on to become a Senior Sports Development Officer within Local Government. Functions included strategic planning, sports delivery, training, development, facilitation and advisory roles within education and community settings. Other roles have included work within the Outdoor Education sector and consultancy on behalf of organisations such as Local Education Authorities, Sport England and the Youth Sport Trust.

Teaching Responsibilities

A primary focus since joining the University has been to ensure that the Sports Development course reflects the demands of the industry; therefore teaching has evolved around linking academic theory to applied and practical experiences. I primarily take an overview of all aspects of the Sports Development undergraduate pathway and lead on a number of specific units such as Sports Development Principles, Sports Development Practice, Application of Coaching, Strategic Planning and Sports Development in Education. I also undertakes external examining and course validation at other institutions, all of which help towards developing the curriculum at Portsmouth.

Research

Research experience and interests include youth participation/disposition towards sport and physical activity, talent identification processes and structures, the role of education in physical activity and sport, leadership and volunteering in sport, also programmes, schemes or initiatives used to develop sports opportunities.
