I joined the Department in December, 2014, as a Visiting Professor. I am Professor Emeritus of Motor Behaviour at the University of Chichester and was, until 2013, Visiting Professor at the Institute for Sport, Physical Education & Health Sciences, University of Edinburgh. Originally I worked full-time as a schoolteacher and part-time as a football coach in Hartlepool, before joining the University of Chichester, teaching and researching in sport and exercise science. My Master of Physical Education degree was obtained at the University of New Brunswick, Canada and my PhD from the University of Southampton. I have written two books, one is in its second edition, on skill acquisition and coaching/teaching, as well as being senior editor of a book on exercise and cognition. At present, I am editing a second book in that domain.
My main research interests are in the effects of physiological stressors, particularly exercise, on cognitive functioning and on the performance of psychomotor skills, with particular reference to neurochemical factors. I am also interested in decision making in team games.
