Profile
| BA (Hons) History of Art, Design and Film (Sheffield Polytechnic) | MA The Social History of Art (University of Leeds) |
I originally joined Portsmouth in 1984 as a lecturer in Art and Design History, specialising in graphic design with research interests related to technological change. As my career developed I became more involved in practical design-based projects and in combining theory with practice. As an educator I encouraged student practitioners at Portsmouth to develop a reflective and critically informed basis to their work. Visual research methodologies have been central to and this and I have developed and taught research methods for creative practice at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

During the 1990s I took an active role in helping establish a critical discourse for graphic design and published in journals such as EYE, which pioneered a new form of design criticism. My involvement with masters programmes in Digital Media in a European collaboration also generated research projects. My research (and lecturing) interests continue to focus on critical frameworks for graphic design and digital media, as well as on topics related to visual culture and technology.
I am currently the acting Head of School of Art, Design and Media.
