Speaker: Dr Nick Baker (University of Cambridge, UK)
Description: It is often said that it is not buildings that use energy, but ratherthe people in them. It is probably more accurate to say that people cause buildings, and other systems, touse energy. And whilst we have developed an almost complete understanding ofthe physics of energy flows in buildings, and can model it with some precision,we have a very imperfect knowledge of the impact of human behaviour in causingthe building to use energy.
The technical development of low energy building design has advanced toan extent where we believe that zero carbon emission could become the norm fornewbuild by 2020. However, time and time again, monitored results of realoccupied buildings, return disappointing performance, a long way short ofpredictions. We also see, huge ranges of energy use in buildings where, superficially, identical activities are being carried out. Clearly, the timehas come to focus interest on the interface between people and the building. This presentation examines the impact of choice and speculates on thefactor that influence choice – the momentof decision to take the stairs or the lift, to turn the lights off or leavethem on all day, to open the window or turn the heating down, to buy a patioheater, and, moving outside the building, the choice to walk, take the bus, orthe car. Can design, in the widest sense, have influence in tipping the balancein the right direction at this critical point?
