Portsmouth School of Architecture (ARCH)

Postgraduate

In addition to our three year undergraduate programmes leading to the degrees BA (Hons) Architecture (Part 1) and BA (Hons) Interior Design, The Portsmouth School of Architecture offers several postgraduate options for students with a good honours degree, or with a combination of academic qualifications and relevant professional experience:

Your choice might be helped by consideration of the following questions:

Do you require a course, which leads to registration as an architect?

If so, students may join the Master of Architecture (M’Arch) (Part 2) and the MA Professional Practice (Part 3). However they must be aware that the only route to registration as an architect in the UK requires successful passing of all three Parts 1, Part 2 and Part 3. The Architects Registration Board (ARB) provides much useful information at www.arb.org.uk.

The Portsmouth Master of Architecture and Final Examination in Architecture (Part 3) are prescribed by the ARB and validated by the RIBA.

The Master of Architecture is a two-year full time programme, now also offered in part-time mode.

The MA Professional Practice is a one-year part-time course, leading to the Part 3 professional interview, which on successful completion, confers the award the Final Examination in Architecture (Part 3) and allows students to register with ARB.

Are you looking for a specialist qualification?

If so, four exciting programmes are offered. The MA Interior Design, the MA Urban Design, the MA Sustainable Architecture, and the MSc Historic Building Conservation provides students with opportunities to develop theoretical and practice based studies in these areas and to develop their own specialist in depth masters thesis.

The MAs are offered in one-year full time or two-year part time modes.

Have you identified a very specific research topic and are prepared to plan and implement a substantial independent programme leading to a research degree?

This might lead you to undertake a Research Degree such as MPhil or PhD in a programme typically lasting 2 to 4 years.
