Portsmouth School of Architecture (ARCH)

Research

In the School of Architecture, we are interested in developing partnerships engaged in research in the area of Architecture, Interior Design and Urban Design. These collaborations will be within the School, the faculty and University, but importantly we wish to work with groups whether academic or commercial, outside the University to investigate possibilities for innovative research and development connected to architecture.

In 2008, the School has been able to create the following two supportive frameworks to develop the potential for the School to engage in real projects from feasibility studies to strategic advice and direction:

The purpose of the office is to coordinate and carry out consultancy and applied research in the School, involving staff, students, part-time staff/practitioners and regional practice. The Project Office is not a conventional practice, it exploits its unique position in a School of Architecture and University allowing access to a huge knowledge base and staff and student workforce.

The purpose of The Creative Urban Regeneration Unit (CURe) is to co-ordinate collaborations between University, City and Region fostering research intelligence and knowledge transfer opportunities in the area of urban regeneration.

The School of Architecture works with the School of Art Design and Media in the Centre for Art, Architecture and Design (CAAD) which supports and advances research across the range of art, design, architectural and media practices, our staff research work connects to common areas of art, design and practice.

Our research connects to our teaching within the School, we have new Masters courses in Urbanism, Sustainability and Interior Design and we are aligning student thesis choices with specialist research interests of staff. In addition, we have a range of projects and units at Part 2 postgraduate level in Architecture which are informing research possibilities for the School in the areas of Urban Design, Sustainable architecture, Architectural theory and Landscape design. If you have any projects that you wish to discuss please contact the School. We are interested to discuss opportunities for research that connect to issues that associate themselves with the development and exploration of excellence in the area of architecture, interior design and the built environment.
