Portsmouth School of Architecture (ARCH)

Urban and Landscape Design
The Research Group in Urban and Landscape Design of the Portsmouth School of Architecture is composed of experienced scholars and practitioners and explores a wide range of topics related to the city. The group investigates the built environment from diverse multidisciplinary standpoints, bringing together different staff expertises. Its aims are to provide a framework for the development of research streams and projects related to urban issues; to foster the development of teaching and learning within the school; to promote knowledge transfer and engage in partnership with external bodies. The research undertaken in the group is directly linked to the MA in Urban Design, current PhD projects and supports the teaching of urban design across the school at all levels.
Subgroups and research themes:
Urban regeneration and localism
LF, FG
Involves the relationship between academic research, knowledge transfer, teaching and the local community. Projects in this area have a strong focus on community engagement, ranging from research through practice to studies into knowledge economy, digital technology, creative cities and innovation space.
Landscape and architecture interface
KB, PCP
Includes research projects into enclosed gardens, ruins and landscapes, green infrastructures, landscape design and teaching, among others.
History and Theory of Urban Design and Planning
FL, PG
Centres its attention in the construction of discourses on the history of ideas in urban and landscape design. Current projects include the development of the green wedge idea in the UK in the first half of the 20th century, the significance of the First International Town Planning Conference organized by the RIBA in 1910 in the debates on urban and park system planning, history of park systems, etc.
Sub-Urban land(E)scapes
DCB
Focus on analyzing what defines ‘suburbia’ today, particularly on the south coast of England, and its transformation across the later half of the 20th century.
Urban Sustainability
FL, DCB, HH, SA
Research on this area is strongly embedded into teaching. We are engaged in a range of studies into eco-city design, thermal analysis of urban spaces, rules of low-energy spaces, etc. The school also works with the University of Portsmouth Environment Network on areas related to urban sustainability.
Other
Other areas of interest include studies on public space for the contemporary city; Intelligent cities; Computing in urban design; The virtual, the hybrid and the city and the relationships between interior and exterior spaces.
The Group’s research inform teaching across the school, especially the MA Urban Design
PhD applications in any of these areas are encouraged. Please get in touch with us if you would like to discuss your research ideas.
