Martin Pearce studied architecture at the University of Portsmouth graduating from the part 2 Diploma course in 1989 with double distinction. He passed the Professional Part 3 examination in 1991 and is registered architect with the Architect’s Registration Board and a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects.

 

He has taught at the University of Portsmouth School of Architecture since 1989 and was appointed as a full time member of staff in 1993. He has worked as year coordinator for each of the undergraduate and postgraduate validated courses and has been course leader for both programmes. During this time he was responsible for the unitisation of both courses and has chaired the Board of Examiners for these programmes. He currently coordinates the first year of the combined BA Architecture and Interior design courses, coordinates the undergraduate teaching of History and Theory, is the Chair of the Board of Studies and Chairs the Part 3 Board of Examiners.

 

He has served on several Faculty and University committees and currently is a member of the Faculty Board, University Library Committee and the School Executive Committee. He was promoted to Principal lecturer in 2002.

 

He is a member of the RIBA Professional Education Committee and works closely with Oxford Brookes University in the delivery of the RIBA’s distance learning Office Based Examination. In addition he has been an external examiner at both Part 1 and Part 2 levels and currently appointed at the University of West of England and the University of Sheffield. He is a member of the RIBA Visiting Board and has chaired several validation events.

 

In 2001 he was responsible for reviewing the design criteria for United Kingdom architectural education the outcomes of which  were published as Tomorrows Architect. He instigated an International conference for architectural educators at Portsmouth the proceedings of which were published in Educating Architects, Academy Editions 1995. He has published two major books, University Builders, Wiley-Academy 2001, and

Bridge Builders, Wiley-Academy, 2002. He has published various articles and building reviews and writes regularly for Architecture Today, one of the leading UK architectural journals.

 

Martin Pearce has untaken various externally funded research projects and his work on the analysis of design studio practice led to a series of annual conferences under the title Studio Culture. He has been a delegate to the Architectural Association for European Educators conferences.  In addition he has worked with research groups supporting Student Diversity in Architectural Education and most recently has published own research on the use of Paradigms in Studio Teaching funded by the Centre for Education in the Built Environment. He was entered in the last University of Portsmouth RAE submission.
