Biological Sciences
Alex Trollope
Qualification: BSc Biology
I have always been interested in science and knew I wanted a career involving it, however I was not sure what to specialise in or where to go. I decided to come to the University of Portsmouth because they had a wide range of science courses and I liked the atmosphere and facilities were excellent. I chose to do a degree in Biology rather than specialising straight away as this pathway gave me more freedom to choose what subjects I did rather than having set topics and pick my units relevant to my interests and career path.
Towards the end of my degree I did more molecular based units because I really enjoyed these and had decided by then that I wanted a more molecular career. After graduating I was lucky to be offered a PhD position at Portsmouth investigating looking at a specific part of the DNA called H1 variants chromatin in chicken with Dr Fiona Myers and I hope to complete my thesis shortly. The PhD has been extremely interesting and I am really enjoying the area of research I am going into. My studies within the School of Biological Sciences have not just taught me about science, but they have also given me the tools and technical skills necessary to be a competent scientist in the future.
