Hi I’m Laurence, when I came to Portsmouth in 2003 I was attracted by the Biology course that was on offer and the Students Union. A mountain biking accident 2 weeks before enrolment meant my leg was in a full cast and I was nervous to say the least! Thankfully I felt at home and the facilities and were easily accessible even if I had to hobble! I therefore enjoyed my first few weeks as a fresher as much as everyone else.
I did the Biology course which was great for flexibility as I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do and this let me chose a variety of units from Microbiology to Biochemistry. My favourite thing about the degree was my final year project, I enjoyed the research so much that I decided to stay on here and study for a PhD in Physical Biochemistry. I’m now involved with the aspects of research that I will need for a future career in science, and still get to demonstrate and assist with the undergraduate side of things.
I also very much enjoyed the social side of Uni life and one of the great things about Portsmouth is there’s always something going on.
