Qualification: BSc in Biochemistry

I joined the University of Portsmouth in October 2005, entering directly into the second year as I transferred from a different academic institution. At the time, making the decision to come to Portsmouth was quite difficult as I’d become disillusioned with my previous course. However, I have never regretted that decision as my interest and passion for my subject was re-ignited. After two years of study, tempered with social activities, I achieved my goal and graduated with a first in Biochemistry.

The third year of undergraduate study allowed me the opportunity to undertake a lab based project, working on trying to determine the domain structure of a bacterial enzyme. This led me to apply for a PhD place at the University, where I am now working on determining the biochemical and biophysical properties of the DNA binding protein C.AhdI, under the guidance of Professor Kneale. Apart from being a potentially exciting and rewarding experience, the skills learned whilst at Portsmouth will be invaluable in securing a career in scientific research.
