Biological Sciences

The Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) is an internationally renowned marine station providing research and teaching facilities for marine sciences. IMS is located at the mouth of Langstone Harbour providing access to the varied marine ecosystems of the Solent and it is ideal for the study of Marine Biology.
IMS is situated in close proximity to an internationally protected wildlife designated area, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Protection Area (SPA) of Langstone Harbour, as well as Chichester Harbour (SPA) and Portsmouth Harbour. This location allows investigation of the marine flora and fauna of habitats that are subject to wide ranging pressures. The mud flats and islands in these harbours provide accommodation for a wintering population of 5000 Brent geese, 35000 Dunlin and numerous other species of wild fowl and wading birds. Additional local habitats of rocky, sandy and muddy shores, estuaries and numerous manmade structures allow for a wide range of research opportunities.
