Future

September 2010 marked the initial stages of a £10 million further re-development of the current Institute of Marine Sciences site. The whole re-development will involve a three stage process, so that the facilities can better accommodate the successful and consistent progression of the teaching and research.

New aquarium and research laboratory (phase 2a) of the redevelopment

The new £2 million aquarium and laboratory facility (Phase 2a) is almost completed with the handover date in May 2011 for the internal fit out of the state of art aquarium facilities. The building comprises of a Home Office approved aquarium floor including five individual aquarium rooms and a quarantine room, as well as designated procedure rooms. The large research laboratory is fully fitted with Köttermann furniture and will have state of the art molecular and general research equipment. There is also a preparation room and walk in cold room, for the storage of samples.

The future phases (Phase 2b and Phase 3) planned for the IMS will involve a further two new buildings. The buildings have been designed to provide space for offices, seminar rooms, undergraduate facilities, experimentally controlled rooms and further research laboratories. Each building will be double storey and will drastically increase the available space compared to the current site. Each separate phase will be linked with a central atrium, providing a buffered environment to the weather.
