The Department of Biological Sciences enjoyed a successful summer period for both staff and students. The Post Transcriptional Gene Regulation Lab, a subgroup of the Institute of Biomedical and Biomolecular Science (IBBS), enjoyed a series of funding successes and awards. They included:

  • Oct 2012 - Jack Philips awarded runner up poster prize at the UoP Research Students Conference
  • Aug 2012 - Anastasia Callaghan receives finalisation for BBSRC grant of £337,000 on Investigating Metabolite-RNase Communication
  • July 2012 - Anastasia Callaghan invited to speak at the Biochemical Society’s 72nd Harden Conference on RNA Regulators of Gene Expression
  • July 2012 - Jack Phillips wins Best Poster award at the Biochemical Society’s 72nd Harden Conference on RNA Regulators of Gene Expression
  • July 2012 - Jack Phillips receives runner-up poster award at the South West Structural Biology Consortium Meeting in Southampton
  • July 2012 - Carlanne Stone received the departmental prize for ‘The Best Molecular Biology Project’ at graduation and nominated for a SET award

As well as these successes, Dr Anastasia Callaghan had two manuscripts accepted and published in Nucleic Acids Research:

  1. The low-resolution solution structure of Vibrio cholerae Hfq in complex with Qrr1 sRNA. Vincent et al., published Sept 2012
  2. Recognition of the 70S ribosome and polysome by the RNA degradosome in Escherichia coli. Tsai et al., accepted August 2012
