Profile

Main research areas

I am an active researcher in the School of Computing engaged in investigating information systems, mobile information systems and technologies and the impact of technology on people, organisations and society.

One of my current projects involves the investigation of mobile phone technology use by different age groups. This study has thrown up some interesting results, and we may have to reconsider gender roles and the use of technology (indeed it looks like ‘age’ differences are more like ‘gender’ differences when we look at technology use).

A further project investigates the use of mobile technologies in professional groups such as Community Healthcare professionals (jointly with Dr Tineke Fitch, Centre for Healthcare Modelling and Informatics, School of Computing). Bringing in new technology really does change peoples’ working practices, not always for the good.

A current and very significant project is investigating mobile convergence from both a technology perspective and use perspective. Some potentially serious conflicts are arising in the actual functioning of the technology (such as the draw upon device resources) and more importantly from the different ways people use mobiles and what they them for.

Topics for PhD supervision

I will consider PhD topics in the following areas (or related areas):
  • Information Systems
  • Mobile Information Systems,
  • Mobile technologies (conflicts, convergence, use, application and implication)
  • Mobile/electronic payment systems
  • M/e-Government, m/e-commerce
  • Impact of technology (particularly mobile) on people, organisations and society

Here is a list of my research output and publications over the 2003-2006 period
