Profile

Part Time Clinical Director (Practice)

This position primarily focuses on providing clinical leadership for the Academy. I also have a major role in overseeing clinical governance within the Academy to ensure that high standards of patient care are consistently maintained, and am responsible for maintaining registration of the Dental Academy with the Care Quality Commission. I have acted as External Adviser to the Cardiff University Programme Approval Panel for the BSc in Dental Therapy and Dental Hygiene.

CLINICAL TEACHING

I participate in clinical and theoretical academic teaching and assessment and examine the Dental Hygiene and Therapy students in their clinical finals examination.

CAREER

I qualified from Bristol Dental Hospital in 1993. Following qualification I spent a year in General Dental Practice as a Vocational Trainee. This was followed by resident Oral Surgery positions in the South West for two and a half years where I gained my Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England. In August 1997 I took up a position as a Clinical Research Lecturer in the Periodontal Department of Bristol Dental Hospital, and gained a PhD in ‘Laboratory and clinical studies on plaque and stain inhibition on dentures and teeth’. This hospital position was combined with part time General Dental Practice. I then moved to Portsmouth in 2002 and spent a year working in the Community Dental Service before taking up my position as Clinical Director at the Dental Academy.
