Research areas

Research in the Department focuses on traditional areas of economics including finance, education, energy, development, health, labour economics and economic history. Specific research achievements include analysis and modelling of regional productivity and growth, the modelling of UK energy demand, parental preference and choices of schools, economic tensions and conflicts in the Commonwealth and the economics of emerging life-style businesses.

In addition, specialised research centres in the Department focus on fisheries, resource and environmental economics; and local economy studies. The Department also has a long-standing reputation in the research of use of computers in teaching economics in higher education.

The Department produces high quality research outputs which are published in leading journals in their field. A selection of journals in which our staff have published in recent years include: Advances in Economic Analysis & Policy, Applied Economics, Asia-Pacific Journal of Economics and Business, Ecological Economics, Economie Appliqué, Environmental and Resource Economics, European Journal of Law and Economics, European Journal of Operational Research, International Review of Law and Economics, Journal of Asian Economies, Journal of Energy and Development, Journal of Environment Economics and Management, Journal of Transport Economics and Policy, Kyklos, Land Economics, Managerial Finance, Marine Resource Economics and Urban Studies.

Sources of Department research funding include the ESRC, European Union, DIFD, Royal Navy, World Wildlife Fund and NHS Executive.

Research centres

The Department of Economics is home for two research centres. Each centre has a distinct identity having a recognised track record in research and consultancy.

CEMARE - Centre for the Economics and Management of Aquatic Resources

CEMARE was established in the early 1960s to promote multi-disciplinary research into marine resources, with an emphasis on the economic analysis of fisheries. Since then it has developed into an international centre for the multi-disciplinary research of aquatic resources and is actively involved in research, consultancy, training and advanced studies, particularly in fisheries economics.

CEAP - Centre for Economic Analysis and Policy

The Centre for Economic Analysis and Policy is an independent research centre located in the department of Economics.  CEAP's main focus is applied economic research, which is used in research, teaching and consultancy.
