Dr Ann Veronica Coats  DPhil  BA MSc M Phil MILAM ARICS

Ann has been studying local and maritime history since 1979 and teaching since 1981. Awarded a DPhil by the University of Sussex in 2000, with a thesis entitled 'The œconomy of the navy and Portsmouth. A discourse between the civilian naval administration of Portsmouth dockyard and the surrounding communities, 1650 to 1800', she started teaching on the MA Maritime Studies.

Ann has given around thirty papers on maritime themes, had five articles published and contributed four articles to the new Dictionary of National Biography. In 2005 Exeter University Press will publish Mutiny and the Navy - Conference papers on the 1797 Mutinies from the two conferences she jointly organised in 1997.

She is a founder of Manuscript Press which has published three maritime history books, a founder and Secretary of the Naval Dockyards Society and Coordinator of the Porter's Garden in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
