SPE is the world’s largest member organization for managers, engineers, scientists and other professionals in the upstream segment of the oil and gas industry. It sponsors University Student Chapters around the world and organises conferences, seminars, workshops, training programs and field trips to help students learn more about the petroleum industry. |
Professional petroleum engineers engage in all areas of the exploration and production of oil from subsurface reservoirs, including transportation to surface facilities and refineries. Due to the remote locations of on, and offshore oil reserves and their respective oil processing plants, graduate petroleum engineers can expect travel extensively and earn the highest average starting salary amongst graduate engineers (2010 NACE, SPE survey).
A global, non-profit professional organization, SPE established a Student Chapter at the University of Portsmouth in October 2011, to benefit students undertaking BEng (Hons) Petroleum Engineering undergraduate studies. The Portsmouth Chapter is run by students themselves under the leadership of SPE Faculty Sponsor/Advisor, Dr. Prashant Jadhawar.
SPE Student Chapters are designed to facilitate networking between students and industry professionals. The University of Portsmouth Student Chapter receives sponsorship support from its local section (London) which hosts numerous events and helps students to organise events of their own.
Since 2011, the Chapter has organised guest lectures by Dr. Brian Moffatt, Director of Petrophase Ltd., Nigel McKim, Pre-Development Director of UK Operations at HESS Ltd., UK, and Dr. John Pucknell of Perneco Ltd., UK.
They’ve also organised a field trip to Wytch Farm oilfield at Poole harbour, attended a seminar at the Royal Geological Society and a graduate skills workshop in London, with more activities planned in the next half of the 2012-13 academic year.
Dr. Jadhawar said,
Having developed the PEB [Petroleum Engineering BSc] curriculum at the University of Portsmouth in February 2011, it's unique feature is its inclusion of all of the operational aspects of petroleum industry, upstream and downstream, such as drilling, reservoir and production engineering and petroleum refining operations.
SPE has provided me with a platform to liaise with petroleum industry professionals to create opportunities for interaction with our undergraduate students. The practical, operational facets of the industry that they’ve learned about will undoubtedly enhance their employability prospects.
Tim Perkins, SPE Student Chapter President at the University of Portsmouth said,
The SPE has broadened the education of those who have sought more involvement in co-academic activities. I've benefited enormously by being in a position of leadership and from the responsibilities this has brought.
Having the chance to make a difference and develop the Student Chapter has given me a better sense of the industry and increased my drive. Dr. Prashant has been the driving force for me and all of petroleum engineering students since the establishment of our own Student Chapter.
