Learning Support Services

The following learning support / further development services are offered by the School of Engineering. They are additional to the normal academic support provided at all levels within the University, and they are run by teams of selected students.


Student Computer Surgery

What support can I get?

The surgery supports students in such areas as:

  • General computer and computing problems
  • Office applications (Excel, Powerpoint, Word, etc.) including OpenOffice
  • Operating systems (Windows and Linux)
  • Website design, web design software and technologies (HTML, XHTML, Dreamweaver, etc.)
  • Database design and implementation (mySQL, MS Access, etc.)
  • Computer programming languages and technologies (PHP, Java, JSP, Servlets, Javascript, Perl, Visual Basic, .NET, C, C++, MatLab, XML)

How do I get support?

Face to face sessions run every Wednesday from 13:00 - 15:00 in Anglesea Building Rooms A2.2 and A2.3 from week 4 to 12 every semester.

Student Electronic Surgery

What support can I get?

The Electronic Surgery supports students in general areas of both digital and analogue electronics, including areas such as:

  • Digital logic
  • Electronic circuit design
  • Microprocessor programming
  • Digital Signal Processing (DSP)
  • VHDL
  • Assembler
  • PCB design

How do I get support?

Face to face sessions run every Wednesday from 13:00 - 15:00 in Anglesea Building Room A0.07 from week 4 to 12 every semester.

Maths Café

The Maths Café offers all students, on any course, free help in understanding and improving their maths and statistical skills. Students can drop in at a number of locations all over campus for one-to-one support or visit the Maths Cafe Centre. Handouts and details of online resources on key topics are also available.

Academic Skills Unit (ASK)

The Academic Skills Unit (ASK) promotes the development of the academic skills and literacies that students need to be successful at university level study. They run a series of skills workshops during the academic year, and also offer individual teaching and support sessions for students who present complex academic skills issues. A selection of handouts is also available online.
