Andrew Little is a Principal Lecturer in Engineering Design at the University of Portsmouth. He completed a five year Undergraduate Apprenticeship with Rolls-Royce Aero Division Bristol and the City University, London. His first appointment was as a Stress Engineer at Rolls-Royce, responsible for the design of safety critical aero engine components. This work included formal hand calculations; computer assisted calculations as well as the “new” (but fast growing) field of finite element analysis.

Andrew subsequently worked as a Designer for Ferranti Computer Systems and Plessey on airborne equipment before coming to Portsmouth, and joining the world of academe. Here he became involved with various structural consultancies as well as pressure vessel research. This resulted in embarking on a PhD while in a full-time post.

Andrew is an active researcher in the field of novel pressure vessels. This has included investigations into the effects of underwater vibrations, the performance of conventional steel structures as well as the use of composite materials in pressure vessels. He is also the course leader for the BSc (Hons) Product Design and Innovation, Computer Aided Product Design and Marine Sports Technology courses.
