Profile
Professor Richardson is currently Director of Research for the Advanced Polymer and Composites Group (APC) Research Group in the School of Engineering at University of Portsmouth UK. He is Visiting Professor and International Advisor to: Sichuan University PRC, Shanghai Jiao Tong University PRC, Zhejiang University PRC; UTM University Malaysia; Coimbra University Portugal; UBI Universidade da Beira Interior Portugal.
He is active in research, consultancy and teaching associated with Composite/Plastics Materials Engineering specialising in nanotechnology and nanocomposites and also charity projects, some featured on the BBC.
His academic interests involve characterisation, analysis, identification, selection, formulation, manufacturing, design, rapid prototyping, testing, structural integrity evaluation, and applications of polymers, thermoplastics, thermosets, adhesives coatings, elastomers, polymer composites and nanocomposites and other advanced materials as well as online learning and teaching.
He is currently a member of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Peer Review College. He has over 210 publications, holds major European Union and EPSRC Research Grants, and is the Leader of three "Natural Fibre Composite" International Research Consortia involving UK, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Sweden, China, Singapore, Mexico, Ecuador, and Columbia.
He was awarded the MBE for "humanitarian services to Tibet and China" in 1998 which included applying the results of his research work to disadvantaged people in the Far East. He is also Economic Advisor to Pingxiang Municipal Government and Honorary Citizen of Pingxiang City.
