Hongwei Wang joined the University of Portsmouth in January 2011 as a Lecturer in Engineering Design. Prior to that, he did his PhD (engineering design) at the Engineering Design Centre of the University of Cambridge. He obtained his BSc (Electronic and Information Sciences) with distinction from Zhejiang University and MSc (Control Science and Engineering) with distinction from Tsinghua University in 2004 and 2007 respectively. His research interests are in the application of information and computing technologies to address specific design issues, for example, knowledge and information management, collaborative product development, collaborative modelling and simulation, sustainable design and product life-cycle management. He is involved in the teaching and supervision of students at different levels on these topics.

Research

Hongwei is currently a member of the Design Engineering Research Group. Research topics he would be interested in include:

• Knowledge Management: the capture, store, retrieval, and re-use of design knowledge;
• Collaborative Modelling and Simulation: the development of methods and tools supporting the collaboration in creating models and performing simulation for multidisciplinary design;
• Design and Sustainable Development: designing with sustainability in mind; development of methods and tools to support decision-making in the context of sustainable design;
• Computational Design: the use of computing in supporting design, for example, optimisation, data mining on design data, knowledge discovery and extraction;
• IT and E-Commerce: Application of emerging information technologies such as Semantic Web, Web Services, and Service-Oriented Architecture in engineering and e-commerce.
