The School of Engineering

Our Teaching

The School of Engineering is dedicated to provide industrially relevant education and professional development of highest quality. Our ever-evolving range of specialist areas leads our graduates to professional engineering and technology based career.

The School offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. Subjects include: electronic engineering, computer engineering, control and automation, telecommunications, data communications, computer networks and Internet technology, mechanical engineering, mechanical & manufacturing engineering, product design and petroleum engineering.

Some of our degree courses within the programme areas have been designed to allow transfer between them at various stages so that students may maximise their potential. Additionally, at the end of the second year of some BEng courses students may have the opportunity to transfer to the MEng route, which is a year longer than the BEng route but fully meet the educational requirement for the Chartered Engineer status.

Quality in teaching

The School is in continuous pursuit of quality enhancements and is an early adopter of initiatives that benefit students' education and improve our support of their learning. We benchmark our delivery against criteria drawn up by the Engineering profession and provide accredited education to a highest relevant level.

We have a long established reputation for producing the types of graduate much sought after by employers. This reputation has been achieved by sound teaching in a friendly atmosphere led by academic staff with national and international reputations in research, knowledge transfer and consultancy.

Engineering is probably the most creative profession of all and students on our courses are challenged to explore their own creativity and realise their full potential. The working environment in the School is friendly and relaxed. We care about our students and offer excellent support services for both academic and personal matters.

Continuous learning

The engineering ethos provides a hands-on, team-work, and problem-solving oriented education philosophy, equipping our graduates with experience and real skills to last them a working lifetime. Continuous learning while practicing go together during studies just as they do in industry.

The School maintains close links with Employers. An Industrial Advisory Board, comprising senior industrialists and university staff, meets regularly to monitor current courses and assist in the development of both current and new courses.

The support and close relationship between the School and our industry partners is always shown through the significant number of industry based student projects that are shown at project day every year. Many of these are developed because students are still actively involved with the companies they worked for during their placement year.

Engineering as a career

Engineers have significantly higher starting salaries than many other graduates with bachelor's degrees in other fields. Once adequately qualified, the long-term career prospect of an engineer is excellent and unemployment is very rare. Engineering is an exciting and safe option for a good future.

Our graduates have an excellent track record in obtaining first employment and subsequent career progression to senior executive positions in British and international companies. In addition many go on to successfully complete postgraduate courses.

An international community

We welcome students from all over the world and are among the most diverse departments, both in terms of staff and students' cultural and geographical origins, in the university. Wherever you may come from, you will not feel lonely here. This diverse environment will be just like what you might find in a global business. You never know, you just might start a new global technological empire with your course-mates.
