Geography

The Department of Geography at Portsmouth is a popular destination within the university sector. The University of Portsmouth is strongly committed to high quality teaching and research, and the Department of Geography has received excellent results in the recent student satisfaction survey.
Both the human and physical geography courses scored well, with human geography courses receiving a satisfaction rate of 98%, whilst physical geography scored 95%. Geography courses at Portsmouth:
BA (Hons) Geography / BSc (Hons) Geography
This is the department's flagship degree, offering a rounded higher education in geography; the final award title reflects the opportunities afforded to specialise on the social science or natural science sides of the discipline.
BA (Hons) Environmental Geography / BSc (Hons) Environmental Geography
This is a new tailored degree focusing on environmental issues within geography. Issues including sustainable development, global warming, rising sea levels, globalisation, poverty, resource depletion and environmental monitoring are some of the areas which can be studied within the curriculum of environmental geography.
BA (Hons) Human Geography
This degree award explicitly focuses on human geography and provides an opportunity for students to specialise in geography as a social science and humanities discipline from the outset.
BSc (Hons) Physical Geography
This is an overtly applied natural science degree focusing on physical and environmental geography from the outset allowing considerable scope for specialism and opportunities for laboratory and field work.
BSc (Hons) Geographical Information Science
This degree embraces the relatively new and expanding discipline of geographical information science; its approach is soundly geographical and is rooted in geographical data sources, analysis and presentation, drawing on the related geographical disciplines of photogrammetry and cartography.
