On Tuesday 11th December, undergraduates on the unit ‘GIS in the Workplace’ and postgraduates on the MSc ‘Applied GIS’ unit were guests of the Ordnance Survey.
The Department has enjoyed excellent relations with our national mapping agency having organised jointly the GISRUK2011 Conference held at Portsmouth University. Students and staff were given talks on current OS research projects and the latest developments in surveying, cartography and remote sensing.
The final presentation was given by archaeologist and historian Alex Langlands, presenter of TV series on Victorian Farm and Wartime Farm and a member of Channel 4’sTime Team. His talk re-examined the ‘palimpsest’ as a model for landscape archaeology and demonstrated the value of maps to landscape research. A great time was had by all!
