Students on the Level 6 option ‘GIS and the Workplace’ were guests of the Royal School of Military Survey (RSMS) at Denison Barracks, Hermitage near Newbury on Tuesday 22nd January. Training in techniques in Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) and Imagery Intelligence (IMINT) are provided to all branches of the Armed Forces by RSMS.
Major Peter Richardson introduced students to the current use of geographical information and GIS in the support of military operations. Major Vic Reeves of the Royal Engineers exemplified the application of modern techniques of terrain analysis and emphasised to students, through an in-class demonstration, the high level of concentration and discipline expected at all times! Mr Chris Symonds outlined the curriculum the various courses taught at RSMS before students were taken on a tour of the establishment which included demonstrations of the application of network and cost-surface analysis to specific military operations in Afghanistan.
