Portsmouth geographer wins grant for fluvial research

Philip Soar a senior lecturer in the deaprtment, has been awarded £17k from the Biedenharn Group, Vicksburg, Mississippi (affiliated to the US Army Corps of Engineers, Engineer Research and Development Center ERDC) to undertake a small research project addressing the influence of plant root architecture on the stability of river flood embankments using Virtual Plants (VPlants) software. This project is a small component of a high profile research theme currently being undertaken by ERDC following Hurricane Katrina, addressing whether woody vegetation presents a risk to the structural integrity of flood embankments.
