13 February 2013: Stop and Search Seminar

The Seminar will debate issues in Stop and Search both in a domestic and a comparative and international perspective. The seminar also marks an agreement between Leiden University and the University of Portsmouth to collaborate both in teaching and research. 1.00 - 4.30pm; Richmond Building, University of Portsmouth. All welcome! 12 December 2012: Book success

Francis Pakes' new book Globalisation and the Challenge to Criminology has been published by Routledge. Carrying contributions from eminant scholars based or partly based in the UK such as Susanne Karsted and David Nelken, North America such as Ben Muller, Juliet Stumpf and David Friedrichs and Dawn Rothe, and Australia and New Zealand such as Karen Pickering, Leanne Weber and B.K. Greener, the book sets out the issues thrown up by globalisation and how the field of criminology is set to meet that challenge. The book is essential reading for scholars and advanced students interested in global transformative processes and their impact on our feelings of crime, justice, security and identity.

Francis Pakes has secured a contract with Routledge for a third edition of Comparative Criminal Justice. The book should be out in early 2014.

David Pritchard and Francis Pakes have secured a contract with Palgrave to deliver an edited book titled Riot: Unrest and Protest on the Global Stage. Featuring contributions from many top scholars in the field including Loic Wacquant (University of California, Berkeley), Philip McMichael (Cornell University), Danny Dorling (University of Sheffield), Fabian Jobard (CESDIP, University de Versailles) and Roxane Farmanfarmaian (University of Cambridge), the book is aimed at extending our knowledge on unrest and protest where disaffection and dispossession is often locally expressed through riot, protest and disorder but frequently exacerbated through global processes and their often perverse outcomes. The book will consider local manifestations of global trends and in doing so will make a significant contribution to our understanding of protest in a global context.

9 October 2012: Research Seminar

Dr Maren Eline Kleiven, Norwegian Police University College: "From Mission Idealism to Operational Realism"

Using a multiple case study design and undertaking a substantial amount of unique fieldwork. Dr Maren Kleiven has conducted a cross-case analysis of three different international police reform missions where Norway had contributed relatively significantly; Serbia, Liberia and Afghanistan.  The presentation was attended by numerous colleagues from the Norwegian Police University College, partner through a Memorandum of Understanding to further collaborative work in teaching, knowledge transfer and research.
