Profile
I am presently employed as Course Director in Community Justice with the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies at the University of Portsmouth. I am responsible for the Educational provision relating to the Probation Qualifications Framework and manage our partnerships with Probation Trusts in London, the South East region, the South West region, the North East region and Wales. My teaching interests are in the broad areas of penology, restorative justice, community justice and the rehabilitation of offenders.
I have previously been employed as a probation officer and senior probation officer of a large city office with 120 members of staff of a variety of grades. My professional experience has been in the management of dangerous offenders, group work with male domestic violence perpetrators and working with male offenders from a gendered perspective.
My main areas of interest and expertise are:
Expertise
- The Probation Service and community punishment
- Implementing Restorative Justice approaches
- Probation Practice and Child Protection concerns
- Risk Management, Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements and the management of dangerous offenders
- The Voluntary Sector in Probation and Prisons
- The treatment and rehabilitation of offenders
I have developed important links with the Republic of Korea Ministry of Justice following three successful visiting scholars at the Institute of Criminal Justice. Mr Keung Song Roh visited in 2008 and studied England and Wales offender satellite tacking pilots. Mr Heung Soeb Lee visited in 2010 to research England and Wales approach to public protection including the Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA). With Professor Mike Nash, I also attended an International Seminar in Seoul to mark the 20 year anniversary of Probation and Parole in 2009.
