Successful Alumni return to the School of Law

The School of Law welcomed back three of its inspirational alumni to a Q&A evening with current students. The Trainee Solicitor Question Time event saw trainee solicitors with local and national law firms return to the Court Room to offer their advice and insight to a group of current undergraduates.
Luke Murphy of Clarke Willmott LLP solicitors graduated in 2009 with a degree in Law and Business. Tom Storey of Coffin Mew LLP also studied Law with Business, graduating in 2010, and Lynsey Pitt of Blake Lapthorn graduated in Law in 2010. All have since graduated from the Legal Practice Course (funded by their respective firms) and are currently undertaking the vocational stage of their training, and due to qualify as fully-fledged solicitors in 2013 or 2014.
The trainees took questions on a wide range of topics, from what questions to expect at interview to a typical day at work. All three emphasised the importance of early career planning and work experience, as well as building up a network of professional contacts. They offered students tips and guidance on how to develop their commercial awareness and how to make their training contract applications really stand out.
Luke said, “Breaking into the legal profession has never been easy but the practicalities of the recession have turned what was already an extremely competitive process into an even more difficult one. It’s great to be invited back to the University to speak to the students whose very position I was in only a couple of years ago. I wish them the best of luck and look forward to working with the University on future projects to support students’ career aspirations”.
All three trainees return to the School of Law in November for the launch of this year’s Mentoring Programme.
