Profile

Bernard Davis obtained an LL.B. from the University of Birmingham and an LL.M. from the University of Portsmouth. He was called to the Bar in 1982 and practised as a Barrister in the Royal Navy until 2009, specialising in criminal and employment law. Starting with a mixed practice of prosecution and defence work, he eventually focused on prosecution work and he became the Royal Navy’s chief prosecutor. He was awarded an OBE in 2002. He had extensive judicial experience at courts-martial and sat as a part-time District Judge in the London criminal courts for four years. He joined the School of Law at Portsmouth in 2009.

Teaching and Research Interests

Bernard is the Unit Coordinator for the Access to Justice and Discrimination/Human Rights courses; he also teaches evidence, acts as a personal tutor and is qualifying as a Citizens Advice Bureau adviser. His main interests are criminal law, human rights and employment law, but he is also interested in Data Protection and Freedom of Information issues and the teaching and practice of trial advocacy.
