Mr Joe Sekhon LLB (Hons), Dip LP, PGCertLTHE, FHEA
Joe is currently a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Portsmouth. Prior to joining the University, Joe was Project Manager of the Centre for Enterprise Development and Research at Southampton Business School.
A lawyer by training, Joe’s research interests are in all aspects of information technology law including intellectual property and data protection law. Joe is also the head of the School of Law’s data protection research cluster. Joe welcomes any consultancy and research enquiries in these and related fields.
Teaching and Research Interests
Joe is the unit co-ordinator for the Intellectual Property Law, Information Technology Law and Constitutional Law units. He also teaches Administrative Law.
Joe’s research and consultancy interests focus on al l aspects of information technology law. He is also a passionate advocate of higher education acting as a catalyst for social mobility. Joe was the first in his family to read law at university and is convinced that widening participation in higher education can bring life changing benefits to the individual students concerned as well as society as a whole. To this end Joe has previously co-ordinated Portsmouth Business School’s widening participation efforts. He also welcomes any research and consultancy enquiries in the field of widening participation.
Pro Bono Work
Joe has worked closely with the Rt. Hon John Denham MP (current Secretary of State for the Department of Innovations, Universities and Skills) on constituency matters relating to residential leaseholds. This resulted in Joe and John meeting with representatives of the Office of Fair Trading in London to discuss the potential exploitation by landlords of current leasehold legislation to the detriment of individual residents and resident associations.
Joe has also previously sat on the Board of Southampton Voluntary Services; an organisation which provides support services to the voluntary sector in Southampton.
Joe has also served as a member of the GP quality assurance team for a local NHS trust. He is also a passionate advocate of ‘self-help’ or what is currently termed ‘life coaching.’ Joe has mentored/coached a number of individuals and helped/motivated them to set and achieve goals. Joe welcomes any consultancy and research enquiries in this area.

Other
Joe was previously Director of Postgraduate Law Programmes at the University of Portsmouth. During this time he restructured the University’s postgraduate law provision and ensured it achieved the accreditation of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators.
Joe lives with his wife (Reena) and two daughters (Hameena and Roxanna) in Bassett, Southampton. He is also a passionate supporter of Southampton Football Club (a thankless task at present!)
