Learning at Work

Learning at Work provides three separate services for people who want to learn through experience at work.

For students on conventional on-campus courses throughout the Faculty of Technology, it manages industrial placements leading (in most cases) to sandwich degrees and registration as an EngTech or ICTTech with IET or IMechE.

Learning at Work also runs the University-wide Partnership Programme, which is designed to allow working people to study for university qualifications - bachelors' and masters' degrees - without leaving their jobs.

Similarly, Learning at Work also runs the postgraduate, distance learning programme in Occupational Health and Safety Management.

The Partnership Programme

The Partnership Programme is work-based learning for busy people. It allows working people to study for university qualifications - bachelors' and masters' degrees - without leaving their jobs. It is based on a three-way partnership between you, your employer and the university. The programme offers a range of subject-specific award titles, but you can study anything you choose so long as it forms a coherent programme. 'Combined Studies' is the award for students whose work is not covered by any of the others.

Since 1991, employees from more than 100 companies have benefited from the Partnership Programme. Many had been away from education for many years or had never attended a university before.

The Partnership Programme is unusual in allowing you to set your own objectives, course content and timetable. Much of the learning toward the award comes from projects that form part of your daily work - which minimises the time spent attending university and gives added benefits to your employer through your increased knowledge and skills.

The Partnership Degree Programme leads to BA and BSc honours degrees; it is suitable for anyone who has had some experience of Higher education (such as a Higher National Certificate or part of an honours degree course) and a few years of experience in work.

The Partnership Masters' Programme leads to MA and MSc degrees; it is the choice for those who already have a first degree, or who have lower qualifications coupled with several years experience in responsible positions. If you've achieved a high level of skill through experience that isn't reflected in your qualifications, the Partnership Masters' Programme could be for you.

This programme can be used to attain Incorporated and Chartered Engineer status with five of the major professional engineering institutions.

The Occupational Health and Safety Programme

This is a distance learning programme in Occupational Health and Safety Management that comprises self-directed study, using work-books, facilitated by a personal tutor using an on-line learning environment.
